Wings & Wheels Soar Together at East Wenatchee

Story by Marlin Lannoye, Photos by Mark Peterson & Marlin Lannoye

Each year on the last weekend in October the City of East Wenatchee holds their annual Wings and Wheels Festival, Cruise and Car Show at Eastmont Community Park.

The festival is to commemorate the landing of the first Trans-Pacific flight from Misawa, Japan to East Wenatchee in October 1931. This amazing feat was accomplished by "Miss Veedol" piloted by Clyde Pangborne and Hugh Herndon. This year's Friday afternoon cruise left the park at 3 pm sharp. The first stop was Century Aviation at Pangborne Memorial Airport where there were three airplanes that were either being built from scratch or being restored. This stop was a big hit as Mark Smith and Karen Barrow and crew spent an hour giving the history of these aircraft.

Our second stop was at Joe Robert's shop where we viewed at least a dozen outstanding projects that Joe had "in progress". Joe also has tons of Seahawk memorabilia, proceed of the 27 years he spent as "down marker" for the Seahawks.

Then off to our last stop - the Hot Rod Cafe for great burgers and free National Street Rod Association safety inspection award pins, handed out by Don Amundson, head of the Washington State Safety inspection team.

Saturday's show was fantastic, with hundreds of gorgeous vehicles, a swap meet, a radio controlled airplane display, helicopter rides, a carnival, 35 booths for kids and food vendors.

30 vehicles were given awards along with $1,000 cash and assorted door prizes were given out. So, before you put your car away for the winter, come to East Wenatchee and enjoy the 16th annual Wings & Wheels Festival & Cruise.
