Westport Run 2018 - Cruisin' Around Town and the Coastal Backroads
By Don Amundson
Westport, WA - As Washington was experiencing an exceptionally warm summer in 2018, many looked forward to the upcoming Eastside Westport Rod Run the third weekend in July. Many participants, especially those that are retired, take an extra day and head for the beach on the Thursday preceding the event. There is a lot going on in the area in and around Westport: with lots of places to explore, many craftsman displaying their work along the highway adjacent to the ocean, and this weekend there was a woodcarvers show in the nearby town of Tokeland.
Registration for the rod run officially starts on Friday at the host hotel, McBee's Silver Sands. Registered participants get the Friday night spaghetti feed where the Jerry McBee Cruisein is held. Then lunch on the poker run on Saturday, followed by the afternoon seafood dinner.
Drifter Mary Louise Darnell, provided "homemade" pizzelle vanilla and orange flavored cookies for dessert.
The run is "layed out" differently every year by Eastside members, Gretchen and Bruce Ojala. They make the drive interesting with their questions and "clues", and it pretty much covers the South Beach peninsula. After Poker run winners and door prize winners are announced, one of "Westport's Finest" turns on his lights and works his siren to begin the parade. This year's Grand Marshal's were Gregg and Shari Kennedy. The newly married couple from Sumner, Washington, led the cars in their beautiful 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air hardtop.
Eastside is supported by a number of really great sponsors. As number after number was called out, people who had driven up from Oregon, over from eastern Washington (Spokane, Grand Coulee), from the north, Bellingham, Mt.Vernon, Camano Island, Arlington, with others traveling from the 1-5 corridor, as well as the greater Puget Sound area. It seemed that nearly everyone won something! At the conclusion of the event, Eastside President Butch Sweet addressed the crowd, thanking everyone for coming, and inviting everyone to attend the 45th Annual Westport Rod Run July 19 -20, 2019.
