Interesting Studebaker "Mix" at Can Am Zone Meet"
By Brian & Barb Curtis
Our Can Am Zone covers a lot of territory, and as such, has many chapters available to host the annual Zone Meet. This year, 2017 was hosted by the Calgary and Edmonton Chapters of Alberta Canada.
We traveled from Washington State to Castlegar, B.C. to meet with James and Stephanie Bell who had toured from the coast. We had an evening of chatter, catching up on things during a pizza dinner, hitting the hay early. The second day of travel was across southern B.C. and Alberta, turning north to Calgary on Hwy 22. The host hotel, the Delta Inn, South, was just off Hwy 2, easy to find. Too late to join the cruise to the "Dub", we settled in for the evening. Saturday morning was photo op time before the crowds hit. I got some good early shots done before the participants began their clean up rituals.
Most interesting to observe the mix, so to speak, as it changes year to year at these events. A large number of bullet-noses, pickups and fifties Hawks and sedans, lacking were the Speedsters and Larks. Avantis were well represented as were a row of Packards. Pre war II cars were in short supply. Jim Teffts annual trek to Can Am in his 25 Duplex Phaeton was joined by a sweet 35 Dictator and a 38 sedan. Custom and Modified cars and trucks once again were prolific. Superchargers were out in force! Supercharged Daytonas, 2R5 pickups, Avantis, cool stuff!
The banquet was blessed to have Stu Chapman as guest speaker. Stu spoke of his days at Studebaker in Hamilton, Ontario. Most interesting to hear it from the horses' mouth! Trophies, raffles and good food capped off the evening.
We thoroughly enjoyed the time in Calgary meeting friends from times past, meeting new folks, kicking tires and eating good food. The tours arranged were awesome! The ladies were treated to a lunch tour Saturday, and on Sunday a grand caravan to the Canadian Museum of Making near Canmore, AB., a fascinating collection of tools from the beginning through the industrial revolution. Man powered, steam powered, an evolution of creativity by man.
We are reminded that the Can Am Zone will be hosting the 2018 International Meet in Tacoma, WA. and as such will not have the Northwest Overdrive or Can Am Zone Meet in 2018. We look forward to seeing everyone in 2018 at Tacoma.
