Bend Features Excellent Show, Excellent Weather & Big News

By Bob Roseberry

The big news out of Oregon at Bend's 2017 Flashback Cruz was that the long time moving force behind the show, Joan Spongberg, is retiring. She has organized the event for over 30 years and, along with her support crew from the Central Oregon Classic Chevy Club, has helped to make it one of the premier events in Eastern Oregon and, indeed the Pacific Northwest. Our best wishes to Joan and, while it is a trite phrase, like most such phrases, it's apt: "She will be missed"!

Aside from this news, the Flashback Cruz was greeted by excellent weather, typical of the Oregon high desert country, as well as an impressive assortment of rods, cruisers and haulers. As a testament to the long lasting draw of Flashback, participants came from all over Oregon, some from California, and many from Washington, including a group from Port Townsend which is far enough north to see Canada! Having covered Flashback for the best part of a decade, it's hard to imagine anyone getting bored-tired and snoring next to (or in) their car, maybe, but not bored.

For 2017, there was the usual Friday Pre-Show at Drake Park that included Hourly Raffles, a 50/50 drawing, and a Cruz to an Ice-Cream Social at NAPA High Desert Auto Parts. Saturday brought the main show back to Drake Park with more Hourly Raffles, a Silent Auction, a Scavenger-Poker Walk and a Bend Shuttle to and from Downtown. Following the Award Presentation, the annual Cruz through Old Town Bend ran from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, after which, JP and the Soulsearchers played for a street dance until 10:00 PM. Throughout both days, music was provided by both the Soulsearchers and DJ Wade Fagan, while the Central Oregon Veterans of America provided food service! And, oh yeah, Sunday Morning brought a Cruz to Nearby Mt Bachelor for the car Olympic. Like we said, boredom wasn't a factor!

For 2018, the dates are locked in for August 3th, 4th, and 5th. The new organizer-in-charge is Kelly Lay and his phone number, to get the low-down on registration, is 541-948-4292. We are looking forward to returning to Bend and hope to see you there!
